Course Description (Structure): Write a general overview of the course and what students will learn while in the course.

This community education course is designed to assist homeowners who are interested in remodeling a room or rooms in their homes. This is a survey course to provide information and resources to those interesting in learning about the process of interior design. Students will learn to differentiate different design styles, create a basic plan for an design project, create a budget for their plan and learn design terminology.

Course Goals: Instructor Pre-determined Objectives (Structure): Describe the overall goals and specific objectives for the course.

Students will be able to provide definitions for basic design terminology. Students will be able to describe the process of interior design. Students will be able to create a design story board. Students will review design software. Students will create a budget.

Course Learning Materials (Structure): Describe any course materials that will be used (External to the website; e.g., books, CDs, etc.)

Optional textbook:

Allen, Phyllis Sloan; Stimpson, Miriam F.; Jones, Lynn M.; Beginnings of Interior Environments, 8th Edition.

Course Communication (Dialog): Describe the type of communication methods that will be used within the course (e.g., email, instant messaging, video conferencing, etc.).

This course will use the course website for communication. The course website can be found at blackboard.community.sdsu.edu/DES101

This website has forums that will allow students to communicate with each other. To use this website, login with your email address and the password “community” and then click on the button on the left navigation panel that is entitled “Forums”. The instructors email address is barbarafaculty@sdsu.edu. Email will be limited to the instructor and student unless students form groups and decide on their own to use email.

Each week students will be asked to post comments in the Feedback forum on what they have learned this week and to give feedback on their changing needs for the course.

Assessments: Instructor Determined (Structure): Describe any major assessments (e.g., exams, projects, other major assignments, etc.).

Please take the technology assessment found at blackboard.community.sdsu/DES101. Then click on Assessments and click on the PreCourse Assessment link. Any students without knowledge of basic skills such as word processing, web searching and email are encouraged to take a basic computing course prior to taking this online course or to take the on-campus course.
This course is a non-credit course, so no tests will be given. Student projects will be reviewed by the instructor and feedback provided. Students will do a course assessment at the end of the course to provide feedback on how the course can be improved. Short informal and formal surveys will be provided throughout the course to see how you are progressing and how the course can be modified to meet their changing needs.

Grading (Structure): Describe how the final grade will be determined, including
percentages for all major assignments.

Course Outline (Structure): Provide an overall description of each class session.

Session:

1.Determining your style. During this session we will examine various design styles and help you identify your own style. Terminology to be used in this course will be discussed. A terminology list will be provided by the instructor under the terminology forum in Blackboard. Students or the instructor may add terms during the course. Students will be asked to describe why they took this course and how they hope to use the information and skills they learn.
2.Planning. During this session we will discuss aspects of the planning process. Students will start creating a plan so that they can start to identify the various steps that must be completed for their project. We will also discuss design software and take a look at some online programs. The Design Software Forum will be used to discuss design software.
3.Storyboarding. During this session we will continue to discuss planning and storyboarding. Students will start creating a storyboard for their project. Students have their choice of using a physical storyboard or an online storyboard. Students using a physical storyboard will take pictures of their storyboard and post pictures in Blackboard throughout the course.
4.Budgeting. During this session we will be learning how to create a budget for design projects. Various issues relating to budgeting, such as obtaining permits, using licensed workers, etc. will be discussed.
5.Let the project begin. During this session students will be sharing information on the progress of their projects. Students will be asked to discuss if and how this course helped them with their plans and projects and how the course could be improved.
