mini analysis - Rudy Dominguez
Topic: Health, hygiene and nutrition for elementary aged kids
Audience: Elementary aged kids (grades k-5)
Mini Survey Questions:
Parents
1 Do kids need health & nutrition knowledge and support?
2 Is it important for them to know?
3 Do your kids brush their teeth every morning
4 Do your kids exercise daily?
5 Do your kids know healthy alternatives for their favorite junk foods?
Kids
1 Should you brush your teeth every day?
2 Is breakfast an important meal?
3 Do you feel better after running during recess
4 Do you know healthy snacks to eat?
5 Do you know any exercises you can do while gaming
What types of questions did you include in your survey?
I included five questions each school aged students and parents. Most questions were yes/no. There was some interview-type discussion after some questions to get more information. Most questions related to the level of knowledge that kids had about health hygeine and nutrition.
Parent questions asked if they felt this was important information for their kids to know. I also sussed out whether or not they knew their kids are currently engaged in healthy practices (brushing and exercising daily, know healthy snacks, etc)
How many people took your survey?
9 total. (4 parents, 5 students ages 8-11)
What did you find out from your mini-analysis?
Health and nutrition instruction is worth pursuing. The students need knowledge and incentives. Support tools and techniques would help as well.
While students are aware of basics like the fact that they need to brush everyday (100% answered yes), there is room for more advanced health and nutrition knowledge such as knowing healthy alternative snacks and simple exercises to perform while video gaming.
Parents are semi-knowledgeable and 100% on board for this instruction. In chatting with them they seem to also lack some information and techniques to support a healthier lifestyle for their kids such as alternative snacks and motivating daily exercise.
How can you use this information to help design your course?
I got baseline levels for the degree of health and nutrition knowledge among students and parents. The identified knowledge gaps will inform instructional objectives and content. While this instruction would be pointed toward the students I would like to come up with a way to include relevant information parents could use to help implement and support this instruction at home.
