Implementing Design Ideas in Distance Learning
When designing a distance course:
• Create a course syllabus that outlines the course goals, objectives, content, and logistics.
• Ensure that all web page layouts are consistent.
• Provide links to performance support materials as they are referenced throughout the course.
• Provide links to additional resources that contain relevant course content (e.g., links to internal knowledge management system, learning management system, corporate intranet site, etc.)
• Provide the contact information for the facilitator, including name, email address, and phone number.
• Create a wiki page in which learners can interact with each other and the facilitator.
• Develop exercises that a learner can complete on their own or via interactivity with the facilitator and other learners.
• Use different mediums throughout the program (e.g., audio, video, text, static images, web pages, etc.)
• Embed checkpoint questions throughout the course to ensure learner engagement and immediate knowledge transfer.
• Use a blended approach. Provide foundational information via self-paced online learning, then follow-up with facilitator-led instruction for practical application of the content.
• Incorporate evaluation forms in which learners can provide feedback (anonymously if they choose) on the course design, technology, and facilitator effectiveness. This can be used to make course improvements for future use.
