4. Homework: Students will learn to apply the principles of design by creating a storyboard using the principles learned in class.

Structure/Procedures: Describe the structure of the session and any step-by-step procedures for the session. (You might want to provide a detailed outline of the session.)

1. Discuss storyboarding and show examples. 20 minutes.
a. Ask students if they have had any experience with storyboarding.
b. Ask students about their experiences and to briefly discuss what they know about storyboarding.
c. Explain conceptual ideas of storyboarding – providing visual images of furniture, carpet, paint, walls, window treatments, etc. and to see how they relate to one another.
d. Discuss principles of design in relation to storyboarding
i. Scale and Proportion
ii. Balance
iii. Rhythm
iv. Emphasis
v. Harmony

2. Have students discuss sample storyboards. 30 minutes
a. Have students log in to www.ethanallen.com using instructions provided in Blackboard with username samplestudent and password sample1
b. Have students examine the posted samples.
c. Ask students to comment on sample 1. Ask that all students participate. Discuss principles of design illustrated in each design.
d. Repeat step 3 for other samples as time allows – not to exceed 30 minutes.

3 . Demonstrate how to create a storyboard. 10 minutes.
a. Create a sample storyboard at Ethan Allen using their design software and explain the process to students.

c. Have students upload images into My Clippings.
d. Ask for volunteers to display their Idea Board.
e. Ask for students to comment on Idea Board with emphasis on using design ideas to justify their comments.

5. For homework. Have students create a storyboard.
a. Have students create accounts at Ethan Allen using instructions provided including provided usernames and passwords.
b. Students should create a storyboard for their own project. This project should be loaded 24 hours prior to the start of the class for review by the instructor.
c. Storyboards should utilize the principles of design.

6. For homework. Read budgeting article.
a. Read the article posted in Blackboard under Course Documents/Budgeting.

7. For homework. Using the link in Announcements, take the weekly online course feedback assessment.

Learning Activities: Describe the learning activities participants will complete
during the session and how these relate to the session objectives.

The learning activity of creating a storyboard helps demonstrate the students ability to use online storyboarding software. The discussion of the samples helps introduce the principles of design. Peer evaluation helps students to evaluate storyboards using design concepts. The learning activity models for students the steps necessary to create their own storyboard. The homework allows the students to use the skills learned in class to apply the concepts to their own projects.

Deliverables: Describe any deliverables participants will produce during this class session. Include an explanation of the type of deliverable (e.g., in-class
assignment, homework, etc.) and how the deliverable will help measure the
performance of students.

1. Deliverable due from last week was the gathering of at least five images that could be loaded during class in the creation of a sample storyboard.
2. In-class deliverable is the creation of a sample storyboard using the images collected from previous week. Students can also use images posted by instructor or other students.
3. In-class discussion can be used to evaluate how students are learning the principles of design.
4. Deliverable for next week is creating a storyboard of their project using the principles of design. Due 24 hours prior to the start of the following session. This deliverable with demonstrate how the student has learned to apply the principles of design. It will also show how well the student has learned to identify their style (from week 1).

Assessments: Describe any assessments used within this class session
(including any self-assessments or peer assessments) and how these
assessments measure the performance of students in meeting the objectives.

1. Students discussion of sample assessments allows students to learn to apply principles of design. Participation grade.
2. Students upload of images that they collected as homework from previous week. This gives students an opportunity to learn how to create a storyboard. This is building block assignment so that students can later create a storyboard as part of their course project.
3. Students create a sample storyboard. These samples can be evaluated to see how well students are selecting items that relate to their style (from week 1).
4. Students evaluation of other students work. Student critique of other work allows the instructor to see how well students understand the application of principles of design.

Resources: Describe any additional resources provided for this session.

1. Textbook ( Allen, Phyllis Sloan; Stimpson, Miriam F.; Jones, Lynn M.; Beginnings of Interior Environments, 8th Edition.) Chapter 6. pp. 148-169.
2. Blackboard forum with links to online design software. Students can discuss the software and help each other with issues.
3. Blackboard forum with links to interior design. Instructor provided links with area for students to comment on usefulness and post additional links.
4. Instructions for using the Ethan Allen site.
5. Sample account with design samples at Ethan Allen site. Commentary on how samples relate to principles of design.
