Emerging Trends in E-Learning
This article was written jointly by the Dept. Computer Science and Dept. Education at the University of Stockholm in 2008.
What I found particularly interesting were two timelines depicting the evolution of e-learning from 1995 to 2007, both culminating in personalization of tools and content. The first one showed the evolution of network systems, starting with CD-Roms, passing through LMS/CMS, multimedia and game authoring. The second on e-learning technologies started with text-based, passing through text-based/multimedia, learning objects and on-line games. This makes the courseware I've been developing a bit "passe'"(not fashionable/out of date). I am currently collaborating on an e-learning project and although we are using Captivate we are using text and multi-media.
The article in many ways was an educational summary which contained information we are discussing in our class currently or I already knew, such as that a two-tiered approach is needed when developing e-learning, one being the theory of learning and the other the technology for delivery, another the need for buy-in from senior management in a company and in an educational setting the issue of teacher and student's level of technological abilities.
