Mini-Analysis: Medical Product Upgrade

NOTE: MedSysPlus* is not the actual product name.

Background information/identified gap:
The training department of the company I work for designs and develops training materials for various clinical and medical products used in hospitals throughout the world. Currently, we are working with a core team comprised of various stakeholders (from the Project Manager to software and hardware engineers) to analyze and scope project details to upgrade an existing medical supply product (called MedSysPlus*). Implementing an upgrade to the MedSysPlus* requires technical training for the technicians that install and support the medical supply products. Currently, and as identified by the core team members of MedSysPlus* SR2 (Service Release), there are no available training materials to support the upcoming implementation.

What types of questions did you include in your survey?
1) Project scope: asked questions pertaining the to extent of software and hardware changes that will impact the implementation of MedSysPlus* SR2.
2) Implementation details: asked questions about process and procedures for upgrading; prerequisite technical skills needed by technicians; resource and support documentation.
3) Constraints: asked questions about aspects of the overall project that could impact training (dependencies on other team members; travel bans for training; training completion date; first date for scheduled implementation).

How many people took your survey?
The entire core team for MedSysPlus* SR2 completed the survey (10 people total).

What did you find out from your mini-analysis?
The upgrade, MedSysPlus* SR2, is primarily comprised of software updates. Most of these updates will be executed through use of a new installer on the MedSysPlus*.
Additional configuration, defined by the hospital’s policies and procedures, will require the technician to alter code within the database. Two new services (not mandatory for SR2, but contractual) have been identified that will also require installation and configuration of executable files to initiate functionality. Resource and support documentation for the implementation process and procedures will continue to be updated through the Knowledge Portal for MedSysPlus*.

Again, the target audience for this upgrade is the install and support technician. It is expected that this group has prior experience with the MedSysPlus* system.

The Limited Commercial Release date for the upgraded product is November 20, 2009. Training will need to occur between Nov. 3-10. There is a travel ban in place, but opportunities for online, or distance, learning exist. The primary constraint in
developing and delivering this training will be on the core team meeting their respective deadlines.

How can you use this information to help design your course?
The information gathered from the analysis will help drive the course goals and objectives. Additionally, Subject Matter Experts from the core team will validate the course content created and, perhaps, serve as panelists in an online offering of the course. Resource and support information identified will be used to design and develop the course as well.
