SESSION: 3 The AVID tutorial process and methods
SESSION OBJECTIVES: Tutors will learn the tutorial cycle, and 3 tutorial methods to implement during AVID tutorial sessions.
STRUCTURE/PROCEDURES: Tutors will read a description of the tutorial process and observe the concept organizer illustrating the cycle. They will then view two videos illustrating the process with real students and tutors. These videos are provided by AVID center. Tutors will be provided with a blank form for them to take notes in. Part of these notes will include essential questions of tutorials. The tutors will then have to write a learning log, illustrating their knowledge of the tutorial cycle. Below is a list of activites for this session.
1.Read the description of the AVID tutorial session.
2.View two videos of excellent tutorial sessions. Tutors will take notes on predetermined elements of the video.
3.Tutors will write a learning log based on what they learned about AVID tutorial sessions. Part of the learning log will include 3 identified strategies tutors used during the videos.
4.Tutors may post questions on the blog to gain a deeper understanding about the topic.
5.Trainer or AVID teacher will provide feedback.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES:
The learning activites are described above. These relate to the session objectives directly. The activities ask for analysis of the AVID tutorial cycle, and asks tutors to identify useful methods used by the tutors in the video. An opportunity for questioning is provided.
DELIVERABLES:
Deliverables include the learning logs and the questions. These will be produced during this session of the course, and will be posted on their googlepage and the AVID staff member blog page.
ASSESSMENTS: The deliverables will be used as formative assessments, and trainer observations will be used as summative assessments. After each assessment, trainers and tutors will meet and discuss performance.
RESOURCES: Tutors will be provided with a job aid they can use during tutorial sessions. This job aid will include key questions to ask students during tutorials and what to do in certain situations. A list of frequently asked questions will be part of this job aid.
Example: What if a student forgets their book?
What if a student did not take notes during class, and is now asking for help during the tutorial session?
